education

Our Education Team recently visited Bryan Middle School and North High School to perform Strum by the critically acclaimed, much-honored African American composer Jesse Montgomery, complete with a video greeting! The students were thrilled to hear such a spectacular piece, written by a living composer and played beautifully by our musician-coaches.

Many thanks to Juliet Yoshida and Kevin Tompkins, violins; Brian Sherwood, viola; Timothy Strang, cello; and Nate Olsen, bass. We sincerely appreciate teachers Rudolph Semar (Bryan Middle School) and Rose Rydberg (North High School), as well as the administrations of both schools for hosting us. And a special shout-out to Dr. Nero, the principal, and Dr. Walters, assistant principal, at North who also were in attendance. It was an amazing experience for all!

The Omaha Chamber Music Society values and is deeply grateful to the Sherwood Foundation for its vital support of our education programs.

chamber music has much to offer our community

OCMS believes that chamber music and music education go hand-in-hand. Our current program with Omaha Public Schools has OCMS musicians working directly with teachers to address the needs of their individual classes. Although the lessons focus on building comfort in technique and musicianship, the ultimate goal is help students communicate, become self-confident, and learn to assess, diagnose, and solve problems. We want students to carry these skills far beyond the orchestra classroom, regardless of what profession they choose as adults. We also give students restored instruments through our Good Vibrations program.
